We are responsible for examining any teacher’s message for its faithfulness to the gospel. John knew this all too well so he provided some criteria by which we can determine if a teaching is accurate. If this criteria is applied, we can be assured that we will be able to distinguish between truth and lies regarding the gospel of Jesus Christ. This week's study, Is This of God? focuses on 1 John 4:1-6, as John helps his readers and us avoid the false teachings we encounter.
The study lends itself to some great discussions on what other groups believe about Jesus Christ. I have provided several learning ideas that I recommend you use to guide the discussion:
- PowerPoint: Use during the entire session - Click to view
- Barna Research: What Do Americans Believe About Jesus? 5 Popular Beliefs - Click to view.
- ACTIVITY: IS THIS OF GOD? - The teaching plan includes an extensive activity that guides the group to identify the false teachings contained in several cults' statements of belief about Jesus Christ. I highly recommend you block time in the teaching plan to utilize this information. I believe it will help adults solidify what they truly believe about Jesus Christ.
If your group desires to learn more about the beliefs of other religions and cults you might want to direct them to the following resource which can be ordered from the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention:
